Ship a Mercedes to Dubai
Mercedes-Benz is the only marque where the badge tells you almost nothing about how the car has to travel. A G 63 is nearly two metres tall. A Maybach S-Class is over five and a half metres long. An AMG GT sits at roughly the height of a kitchen counter. Those three cars share a star and share nothing else that matters to a freight plan — different aircraft decks, different pallets, different loading angles, different chargeable weight.
Opera Shipping moves high-value Mercedes into and out of Dubai by air: enclosed, climate-stable, handled the fewest possible times, insured with no upper limit on value, and run by one coordinator from collection through to RTA registration. It is the Mercedes-specific version of our luxury and exotic car shipping service.
The fastest answer: how to ship a Mercedes to Dubai
- Recommended method: air freight in an enclosed unit — fastest, lowest-touch, climate-stable.
- Considered second: a dedicated, sole-use enclosed sea container.
- Not recommended for a high-value Mercedes: shared container or open RoRo.
To quote your car we need:
- Model, model year, exact variant and body style
- Origin city and country, destination in the UAE
- Whether the car runs and is standard or modified
- Your timeline
Which Mercedes this page is for
This page is written for the cars people fly: G-Class and AMG G 63, AMG GT, S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach, SL, EQS, and the collector and limited-series cars that sit alongside them.
That distinction matters more for Mercedes than for any other marque, because Mercedes is sold widely in GCC specification across the UAE through an authorised network. For a replaceable, mainstream car, importing your own is rarely the sensible move — you can buy the same car locally, already compliant, already covered. Ferraris and Rolls-Royces are not comparable in this respect.
Importing is the right decision when the car is not replaceable: a specific AMG or Manufaktur build, a Maybach configured to order, a variant never offered in the Gulf, a car with history or provenance, or simply the car you have owned for years and are not prepared to sell because you are moving. Those are the shipments this page — and this service — exists for. If that is your car, everything below applies. We will tell you honestly if it isn't.

The reality of shipping a Mercedes: one badge, four different loads
Every operational decision follows from the car's dimensions, not its badge. This is where Mercedes diverges from every other marque we handle.
Tall and boxy: the G-Class
The current G-Class stands between roughly 1,971 mm and 2,042 mm tall depending on variant and roof equipment, on a body about 1,931–1,984 mm wide. That height has one hard consequence: the lower deck of a passenger widebody is generally limited to around 163 cm, so a G-Class cannot travel as belly cargo. It needs main-deck freighter capacity, which shapes routing and available departures far more than the car's weight does.
Volume also drives the price mechanism. Air freight is charged on chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, calculated at the IATA divisor of 6,000. A G-Class encloses roughly eighteen cubic metres of air, so its volumetric weight exceeds its actual weight and governs the rate. This is the honest reason a G 63 flies differently from a sedan that weighs the same, and it is worth understanding before you compare quotes.
Long: S-Class and Mercedes-Maybach
A long-wheelbase S-Class runs to about 5,289 mm; a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class to roughly 5,470 mm. Both exceed the length of a standard 318 × 244 cm PMC air pallet, so they are built up on a 20-ft base pallet (606 × 244 cm) instead. By sea, the maths is just as tight: a standard 20-ft container has an internal length of about 5.90 m, which leaves a Maybach barely 40 cm of total working room for lashing and safe egress. We normally specify a larger container for these cars rather than force the fit.
Low: AMG GT and SL
The AMG GT coupé sits at 1,354 mm and the SL at 1,359 mm. Height is a non-issue; the approach angle is everything. These cars are loaded on lift-gates or extended shallow ramps, never driven up a steep incline that could catch the front lip, and secured with soft over-the-tyre straps at the wheels rather than anything touching the body or suspension.
Battery: EQS and G 580 with EQ Technology
Electric Mercedes are not ordinary air cargo. A battery-electric vehicle moves under UN 3171 / UN 3556 as Class 9 dangerous goods, and under IATA Packing Instruction 952 the battery must be offered at no more than 30% state of charge — or with indicated capacity no higher than 25%. These limits became mandatory on 1 January 2026. Our standing rule for air — fuel or battery charge kept under a quarter — sits inside them, and we prepare the car to that state at collection so nothing is discovered at the ramp.
Air vs sea freight for a Mercedes
Air freight (recommended)
The car travels in an enclosed unit — the quickest route, the fewest hands on it, and a stable environment throughout. Fuel or battery charge is kept below a quarter. This is how high-value Mercedes move between the UAE, Europe, the UK and the USA, and for a G-Class it also means main-deck freighter capacity rather than belly space.
Explore Air FreightDedicated enclosed sea container (considered second)
One car, one container, sole use. Private and protected, for owners who do not need air speed. Longer in transit, never shared — and, for a Maybach or long-wheelbase S-Class, specified with the length headroom the car actually needs.
Explore Dedicated ContainersShared containers and open RoRo exist and we operate them, but they involve shared or exposed handling and we do not put a high-value Mercedes on either. Our air freight and sea freight pages set out how each method works.
How shipping a Mercedes to Dubai works
Quote and booking
Model, model year, variant and value; origin and UAE destination. We confirm method, aircraft or container type, and the paperwork required at both ends.
Enclosed collection and condition report
The car is collected under cover and photographed in full before it moves, including the underside and lower front edge, so its condition is documented from the outset. A European Mercedes may be collected close to where it was built — AMG engines come from Affalterbach, and the G-Class is assembled at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, not Germany, which is worth knowing when you are arranging a factory or dealer collection.
Export documentation at origin
Title or registration document and export clearance. If the car is leaving Dubai, the RTA export certificate and deregistration instead.
Air transit with tracking
Fuel or battery prepared to under a quarter, EV dangerous-goods documentation raised where it applies, the car built up on the right ULD and secured. Your coordinator updates you at each stage.
UAE customs clearance
5% customs duty on the car's value plus freight and insurance, then 5% VAT on the duty-inclusive total. The Vehicle Clearance Certificate is issued, and where the car is not GCC-specification we arrange the GCC Conformity Certificate through MoIAT.
RTA inspection, registration and delivery
Inspection, insurance, registration, Mulkiya and plates — then the car is delivered to you. Cars flown in arrive at DXB or DWC; sea shipments come through Jebel Ali, with Khalifa (Abu Dhabi) and Khalid (Sharjah) as alternatives.
Documents and UAE customs for a Mercedes
On import the UAE charges 5% duty on the value plus freight and insurance, and 5% VAT on the duty-inclusive total. In practice the all-in landed cost on a high-value car commonly runs 13–18% above the car's value once conformity, inspection, insurance and registration are added — we set that expectation before you commit rather than after.
The GCC-specification question is sharper for Mercedes than for most marques, because so many of the cars we move originate in Germany and the wider European market. A Mercedes built to European specification is not automatically accepted for UAE road use: it needs a GCC Conformity Certificate from MoIAT before the RTA will register it. MoIAT assesses the car against UAE standards on climate and air-conditioning tolerance, emissions and catalytic converters, lighting and electrical configuration, safety and structural integrity, and speedometer calibration in kilometres per hour. On a European car, cooling capacity and lighting configuration are the usual points of attention.
LHD, RHD and Age Restrictions
Two further rules catch people out. The UAE registers left-hand-drive cars for road use — right-hand-drive is restricted, with narrow exceptions for classics, which matters if your car is coming from the UK. And cars over ten years old require pre-approval, while cars over thirty may qualify as classics under permit.
Because a Mercedes of this calibre carries a substantial declared value, accurate valuation and clean paperwork carry more weight here than on an ordinary import — which is precisely the part we manage end to end. See our import hub for the full UAE-side process.
Mercedes models we ship
We handle the premium and performance Mercedes lines, and classic and collector cars alongside them:
We also ship the wider GLE, GLS and E-Class ranges where an owner is relocating with the car, though the compliance and handling notes above are written around the premium lines.
Shipping a Mercedes from Dubai
Export runs the same way in reverse, and it is the busier direction for this marque. Dubai holds one of the world's deepest concentrations of G-Class and AMG cars, and owners move them out constantly — permanently on relocation, or seasonally.
March to June is the peak air-export window, when owners fly cars to Europe for the summer. If you are planning a summer move, book into that window early; capacity for main-deck freighter space, which a G-Class requires, is the first thing to tighten.
On the Dubai side we handle the RTA export certificate and deregistration; at destination we handle the import formalities and the compliance step that country requires. Common runs for this marque are Dubai to Germany and Dubai to Europe — see our export hub for the full process.
Tracking, safety and insurance
The car is enclosed from collection, secured at the wheels rather than the body or suspension, and covered by a documented condition report so its state is recorded before and after transit. Your dedicated coordinator — one named contact, not a queue — updates you at collection, departure, arrival, clearance and delivery.
On insurance, the distinction is the one that actually decides outcomes. Clause C (Total Loss) pays out only if the car is lost. Clause A (All Risk) covers damage in transit as well. For a high-value Mercedes we work to Clause A, and there is no upper limit on the value we will insure. We will tell you which cover a shipment is on before it moves, in writing.
What shapes your Mercedes shipping quote
Rather than publish a figure that would not survive contact with your actual car, here is what genuinely moves it:
- The car's dimensions, not just its weight — height and volume set the chargeable weight and can decide whether it needs main-deck freighter capacity
- The method — air versus a dedicated enclosed container
- Origin and routing — a car leaving Germany routes differently from one leaving the UK or the USA
- Powertrain — battery-electric cars carry dangerous-goods handling and documentation
- The car's value, which sets both the insurance and the UAE duty calculation
- Season — March to June is the busy window in both directions
- Conformity — whether the car is already GCC-specification or needs the MoIAT step
Tell us the specifics and we will quote the real number for your car and your route.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I ship my Mercedes to Dubai safely?
By air in an enclosed unit, handled the fewest possible times, secured at the wheels, covered as all-risk with no upper limit on value, and run by one coordinator from collection through to RTA registration. A sole-use enclosed sea container is the considered alternative. For a G-Class, "by air" specifically means main-deck freighter capacity — its height rules out belly cargo.
How much does it cost to ship a Mercedes to Dubai?
It varies with the car's dimensions and value, the method, the origin and routing, and the season, plus UAE duty and VAT on import. We do not publish a flat figure because it would mislead — a G 63 and an AMG GT leaving the same city price very differently. Request a free quote and we will price your exact car and route.
Why does a G-Wagon cost more to fly than a sedan that weighs the same?
Because air freight is charged on chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, calculated at the IATA divisor of 6,000. A G-Class is tall and boxy, so it encloses far more volume than a low sedan and its volumetric weight governs the rate. Its height also requires main-deck freighter capacity rather than the lower deck of a passenger aircraft, which narrows the routing options.
Does my Mercedes need GCC-spec conformity?
If it is not already GCC-specification, yes — you will need a GCC Conformity Certificate from MoIAT before the RTA can register it. This applies to most German and wider European-market cars. MoIAT assesses climate and air-conditioning tolerance, emissions, lighting and electrical configuration, safety and structure, and speedometer calibration. We arrange this step as part of clearance.
Can I ship an electric Mercedes such as an EQS or the G 580?
Yes. Battery-electric cars travel under UN 3171 / UN 3556 as Class 9 dangerous goods, and IATA PI 952 limits the battery to no more than 30% state of charge, or indicated capacity no higher than 25% — mandatory since 1 January 2026. Our standing rule for air is that fuel or battery charge is kept under a quarter. We prepare the car and raise the documentation at collection.
Should I import my Mercedes, or buy one in Dubai?
An honest answer: if the car is replaceable, buying locally in GCC specification is usually simpler. Import when the car is not replaceable — a specific AMG or Manufaktur build, a Maybach configured to order, a variant not offered in the Gulf, a car with provenance, or the car you are relocating with and do not intend to sell. Tell us which it is and we will give you a straight view.
Can I ship a right-hand-drive Mercedes from the UK?
The car will ship without difficulty, but the UAE registers left-hand-drive cars for road use and right-hand-drive is restricted, with narrow exceptions for classics. Confirm the position for your specific car before it leaves — we do this as part of the quote. See UK to Dubai for that corridor.
How should I prepare my Mercedes before shipping?
For air, fuel or battery charge is kept below a quarter. The car should be clean so its condition is unambiguous on inspection, empty of personal belongings, and with tracker, alarm and any air-suspension or transport-mode details shared. If it is a low AMG GT or SL, tell us about any aftermarket lip or splitter. We guide you through it at collection.
Can you ship a classic Mercedes?
Yes, and classics are shipped enclosed as standard. UAE rules apply pre-approval to cars over ten years old, and cars over thirty may qualify as classics under permit. We confirm the position for your specific car before anything is booked rather than after it has shipped.
Can you ship a Mercedes from Dubai as well as to it?
Yes. Export from Dubai is busiest March to June, when owners move cars to Europe for the summer — Dubai to Germany is a frequent run for this marque. Book early for that window, particularly for a G-Class, where main-deck capacity is the constraint.
