Ship a Porsche to Dubai
A 911 is the only car we fly with its engine behind the rear axle. Around 60 per cent of its mass rides over the back wheels, and that one fact decides where the car sits on a pallet, which axle gets the positive restraint, and which end a handler should be standing at. A Porsche is not a fragile load. It is an unevenly balanced one — a different problem, solved differently.
Opera Shipping moves Porsches into and out of Dubai by air: enclosed, climate-stable, handled the fewest possible times, insured with no upper limit on value, and run by one dedicated coordinator from collection through to RTA registration. Whether it is a 992.2 Turbo S leaving Stuttgart, a Taycan following its owner into a relocation, or an air-cooled 911 joining a collection, this is the Porsche-specific version of our luxury and exotic car shipping service, part of our wider car shipping operation.
The fastest answer: how to ship a Porsche to Dubai
- Recommended: air freight in an enclosed unit — fastest, lowest-touch, and the method where load position is calculated rather than improvised.
- Considered second: a dedicated, sole-use enclosed sea container.
- Not recommended: shared container or open RoRo for a car of this value.
To quote we need:
- Model, year and exact variant (a GT3 RS is not a Carrera)
- Origin and UAE destination
- Whether the car runs and is standard
- Whether it is air-cooled or over thirty years old
- Your timeline
The reality of shipping a Porsche: the mass is in the wrong place
Every operational decision on a 911 follows from one line on Porsche's own data sheet. Under Engine layout it says Rear Engine — as it has on every 911 since 1963.
Roughly 60 per cent of a 911 sits over the rear axle
Measured figures for modern 911s land between 38/62 and 40/60 front to rear. Under the IATA ULD Regulations the centre of gravity of a loaded unit is a stated limitation, alongside area load, linear load and contour — a built-up pallet is part of the aircraft's structure in flight, not a packing crate. So an eccentrically loaded car is positioned by calculation, not by eye, and its centre of gravity is declared rather than assumed. The same asymmetry decides restraint geometry: the heavy end holds itself down, so the light front axle is what must be positively restrained rather than trusted to friction. It is also why a 911 is loaded rear-first and its fore-and-aft position adjusted, rather than driven on and strapped where it stops.
Porsche itself puts ballast in the nose
You do not have to take our word for the imbalance; Porsche engineers around it. On the current 911 T-Hybrid cars, the traction battery — 1.9 kWh, 400 volts, NMC chemistry, roughly 27 kilograms — is mounted under the front bonnet, and Porsche's stated reason is optimised weight distribution. When the manufacturer's answer to adding hybrid hardware is to put the heaviest new component as far forward as it will go, that tells you everything about where the rest of the car's mass already is.
The car is not symmetrical, and neither is the kit that holds it down
Porsche's data for the 992.2 Carrera lists 8.5J × 19-inch wheels on 235/40 tyres at the front and 11.5J × 20-inch on 295/35 at the rear — two rim diameters and a sixty-millimetre tyre-width difference on one car. A restraint set sized to the front axle does not sit correctly on the rear, and chocks cut for one diameter do not seat on the other. We specify the restraint set per axle before collection.
Everything a handler reaches for is at the wrong end
On a 911 the luggage compartment is at the front — 132 litres on a Carrera, 128 on a Turbo S — and so are the tool box and the screw-in towing eye, which sits behind a cover in the front bumper on a left-hand thread. The one place with no storage and no recovery point is the back, where habit says to look.
For contrast, the constraints on a low, mid-engined car are an entirely different set — see shipping a Ferrari to Dubai.
Air versus sea freight for a Porsche
Air freight (recommended)
An enclosed unit on a controlled route, with the fewest handovers — and the method where the load's centre of gravity is planned rather than discovered. Fuel or charge is kept under a quarter.
See how air freight car shipping worksDedicated enclosed sea container (considered second)
One Porsche, one container, braced to its own dimensions. Slower, but sealed end to end.
Explore Dedicated ContainersWe operate shared containers and RoRo, both legitimate for ordinary cars. We do not put a Porsche on either: both mean handling by people who have not planned around an eccentric load, a left-hand-thread tow eye and two wheel diameters. See our sea freight pages for details.
How shipping a Porsche to Dubai works
Quote and booking
Model, model year, variant and value; origin and UAE destination. We confirm the method, the equipment, the paperwork at both ends, and a realistic window.
Enclosed collection and condition report
The car is collected under cover and photographed in full — including the front bumper cover and the wheels at each corner, where restraint marks show first. Many Porsche collections start in Germany, since the 911 and 718 are built in Zuffenhausen; see car shipping from Germany to Dubai.
Export documentation at origin
Title or registration document and export clearance. If the car is leaving Dubai, the RTA export certificate and deregistration instead.
Air preparation and transit
Fuel or charge under a quarter, restraint specified per axle, the car positioned for its centre of gravity, and on an electric Porsche the dangerous-goods documentation raised at collection. Our import service runs both sides as one file.
UAE customs clearance
Customs entry, then the Vehicle Clearance Certificate, then GCC-spec conformity through MoIAT if the car is not already GCC-specification. Duty at 5% on the value plus freight and insurance, and 5% VAT on the duty-inclusive total.
RTA inspection, registration and delivery
Inspection, insurance, registration, Mulkiya and plates — then delivery enclosed. Flown cars arrive at DXB or DWC; sea shipments through Jebel Ali, with Khalifa and Khalid as alternatives.
Documents and customs for a Porsche
On import the UAE charges 5% customs duty on the car's value plus freight and insurance, and 5% VAT on the duty-inclusive total. With conformity, inspection, insurance and registration added, the all-in landed cost commonly runs 13–18% above the car's value. We set that expectation before you commit.
A European-specification Porsche is not automatically accepted for UAE road use: it needs a GCC Conformity Certificate from MoIAT before the RTA will register it. MoIAT assesses climate and air-conditioning tolerance, emissions, lighting and electrical configuration, safety and structure, and speedometer calibration in km/h. Two further rules catch people out: the UAE registers left-hand-drive cars for road use, with right-hand-drive restricted; and cars over ten years old require pre-approval.

Air-cooled and Porsche Classic cars
This is where the paperwork matters more than the physics.
A Porsche over thirty years old — a 930, a 964, a 993 — can come into the UAE, but the route is different. It needs pre-approval before it ships, and it registers as a classic rather than an ordinary car: a Classic plate, on a restricted-use basis with annual mileage limits, oriented towards events and exhibition rather than daily driving. That is a real constraint on what you can do with the car once it lands, and it should be established before a deposit is placed. We confirm the position and category for your specific car at quotation.
Provenance also does more work here than on a modern car. Porsche will supply a Production Specification drawn from the original build card, and a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate recording engine and transmission identification alongside a 63-point assessment. On a matching-numbers air-cooled car, that file is what supports a defensible customs valuation and an insurance position reflecting what the car actually is. We ask for it early and ship it with the file.
Porsche models we ship
Battery-electric Porsches travel as Class 9 dangerous goods with a mandatory state-of-charge limit. Our standing rule for air — charge under a quarter — sits inside it. The mechanism is the same one we set out in full on the Mercedes page; what is different about a Porsche is the 800-volt architecture, which changes the ground-handling briefing rather than the paperwork.
Shipping a Porsche from Dubai
Export runs the same way in reverse, and for this marque it is a busy direction. March to June is the peak air-export window, when owners fly cars to Europe ahead of the Gulf summer. On the Dubai side we handle the RTA export certificate and deregistration; at destination, the import formalities. Common runs are Dubai to Germany and Dubai to Europe — see our export hub. Book early.
Tracking, safety and insurance
The car is enclosed from collection, restrained at the wheels per axle, and covered by a documented condition report. Your dedicated coordinator — one named contact, not a queue — updates you at each stage.
On insurance the distinction decides outcomes. Clause C (Total Loss) pays only if the car is lost; Clause A (All Risk) covers damage in transit as well. For a Porsche we work to Clause A, with no upper limit on the value we will insure. On an air-cooled car that is not a formality: a matching-numbers engine and original paint cannot be reinstated by a claim that responds only to total loss. Over the past few years we have moved 911s, Taycans and classic Porsches in and out of the UAE on that protocol — enclosed, minimal-touch, documented.
What shapes your Porsche shipping quote
Rather than publish a figure that would not survive contact with your car:
- The variant rather than the model, since a GT3 RS and a Carrera are the same nameplate and a different load
- Air versus a dedicated enclosed container
- Origin and routing
- Powertrain, because an 800-volt car is a dangerous-goods movement
- The car's value, which sets insurance and duty
- Age and status
- The season
Give us the variant and the route and we will price the actual car, not a category.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I ship my Porsche to Dubai safely?
By air in an enclosed unit, positioned for its centre of gravity, restrained per axle, covered as all-risk with no value cap, and run by one coordinator through to RTA registration. A sole-use enclosed container is the alternative.
How much does it cost to ship a Porsche to Dubai?
It varies with variant, method, origin, the car's value and season, plus UAE duty and VAT. We do not publish a flat figure because it would mislead — a GT3 and a Macan Electric leaving the same city price very differently. Request a free quote.
Why does a 911 have to be positioned differently from other cars?
Because its engine is behind the rear axle and roughly 60 per cent of its mass sits over the back wheels. Centre of gravity is a stated limitation on a built-up air pallet, so the car is placed by calculation rather than centred by eye — and the front, being the light end, is what has to be positively restrained.
Does my Porsche need GCC-spec conformity?
If it is not already GCC-specification, yes — a GCC Conformity Certificate from MoIAT before the RTA can register it, which applies to most European-market cars. We arrange it as part of clearance.
Can you ship an air-cooled or classic Porsche, and can it be registered?
Yes to shipping — classics travel enclosed as standard. Registration is the part to settle first: cars over ten years old need pre-approval, and a car over thirty may qualify as a classic — a restricted-use registration with a Classic plate and annual mileage limits. We confirm the position before booking.
Can you ship a Taycan, Macan Electric or Cayenne Electric?
Yes. Battery-electric cars travel as Class 9 dangerous goods under a mandatory state-of-charge limit, and our under-a-quarter rule sits inside it. The Porsche-specific point is the 800-volt architecture, which changes the ground-handling briefing. The car is prepared at collection and the paperwork travels with it.
How should I prepare my Porsche before it ships?
Fuel or charge below a quarter, the car clean and empty of belongings. Tell us if it has PCCB brakes, rear-axle steering, a front-axle lift, an aftermarket splitter or non-standard wheels, and leave the tool kit and towing eye in the front compartment.
My Porsche has been in storage — does that matter?
It can, and it is the most common avoidable delay we see. Porsche's guidance is that a platform should only be used if the electric parking brake can be released, and that a car with a flat on-board battery should not be pulled onto one. Tell us how long it has been standing and we will bring the right equipment.
Can I ship a right-hand-drive Porsche from the UK?
The car ships without difficulty, but the UAE registers left-hand-drive cars for road use and right-hand-drive is restricted. We establish that as part of the quote. See UK to Dubai.
Can you ship a Porsche from Dubai as well as to it?
Yes. Export is busiest March to June, and Dubai to Germany is a frequent run for this marque. Book early.
