McLaren Car Shipping Dubai

Ship a McLaren to Dubai

A McLaren has no chassis. Under the paint there is one moulded carbon-fibre tub, and that tub is the car: its structure, its safety cell and, on the Artura, the housing for its battery. It is also why a McLaren cannot be lifted, jacked or strapped wherever a handler finds a convenient edge. On an ordinary car the wrong lifting point dents a steel sill; on this one it puts a load into the structure.

Opera Shipping moves McLarens into and out of Dubai by air: enclosed, handled the fewest possible times, insured with no upper limit on value, and run by one dedicated coordinator from collection through to RTA registration. Whether it is a 750S leaving Woking, an Artura Spider following its owner into a relocation, or a GTS joining a collection, this is the McLaren-specific version of our luxury and exotic car shipping service.

The fastest answer: how to ship a McLaren to Dubai

  • Recommended method: air freight in an enclosed unit — fastest, lowest-touch, and the fewest lifts between collection and delivery.
  • Considered second: a dedicated, sole-use enclosed sea container — one car, one container.
  • Not recommended: shared container or open RoRo for a car of this value.

To quote your McLaren we need:

  • Model, year and exact variant
  • Origin city and country, UAE destination
  • Whether the car runs and is standard
  • Whether it carries an aftermarket splitter or lowered ride height
  • Your timeline

The reality of shipping a McLaren: there is no chassis to lift it by

The tub is the car, and it weighs about 82 kg

Every modern McLaren road car is built around a single moulded carbon-fibre monocoque — MonoCell and MonoCage on the earlier cars, the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture tub under the Artura, the Aerocell under the W1. There is no steel or aluminium spaceframe beneath the bodywork to absorb a mistake. The published figure for the Artura's carbon structure is 180.4 lb, about 82 kg; it is built at the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, then moved roughly 280 km to Woking, Surrey, for hand assembly. On the Artura that structure also serves as the safety cell for the battery pack — a second reason not to improvise a load path into it.

Four marked points, and the floor is not one of them

Almost everything visible under a McLaren is aerodynamic floor panelling, not structure. The lifting points are defined and physically marked: at the front they sit on the carbon tub itself, at the rear on small exposed sections of the aluminium rear structure — the only underside area not covered by panels. Miss them and the load goes into a composite floor never designed to carry the car on a pad. Because the tub is exceptionally stiff, jacking one marked point can lift both wheels on that side. We specify equipment and contact points before a McLaren is collected, not at the kerb.

It is winched onto a transporter, never towed onto one

McLaren's handbooks are explicit: the car is not to be towed on its wheels, and the recovery eye exists to winch it onto a flatbed. That eye is stowed in the luggage compartment rather than fitted, so a handler who has not read the file will not find it. Every leg of a McLaren move is therefore flatbed or lift-gate, with the car secured over the tyres — never a rope and four wheels down, never a strap across a panel or aero surface.

Three parts of the car are not fixed

The dihedral doors rotate outward and upward on a single hinge and, unlike a conventional door, do not sit part-open — they are shut or through their full arc, so the clearance envelope beside the car must be right first time. The active rear wing deploys, retracts and doubles as an airbrake; it is confirmed stowed and never used as a handling point. Roll control is hydraulic, interlinked dampers replacing anti-roll bars entirely, so the height the car presents once lashed is measured, not assumed.

The low nose matters too — but that is the constraint we set out on shipping a Ferrari to Dubai. On a McLaren it is the least interesting of the four.

Air versus sea freight for a McLaren

Air freight (recommended)

An enclosed unit on a controlled route, with the fewest handovers — and every handover is a lift, which is exactly what we are minimising on this marque. Fuel or charge is kept under a quarter for flight.

See how air freight car shipping works

Dedicated enclosed sea container (considered second)

One McLaren, one container, braced to its own dimensions. Slower, but sealed end to end.

Explore Dedicated Containers

We operate shared containers and RoRo, and both are legitimate services for ordinary cars. We do not put a McLaren on either: both mean handling by people who have not been briefed on marked lifting points, a stowed recovery eye and a door with no half-open position.

How shipping a McLaren to Dubai works

1

Quote and booking

Model, year, variant and value; origin and UAE destination. We confirm method, equipment, paperwork and a realistic window.

2

Enclosed collection and condition report

The car is collected under cover and photographed in full before it moves — front splitter, lower body edges and underside markings included. Many collections start in Britain, because the cars are assembled in Woking; see car shipping from the UK to Dubai.

3

Export documentation at origin

Title or registration document and export clearance — or, leaving Dubai, the RTA export certificate and deregistration.

4

Air preparation and transit

Charge or fuel under a quarter, the car loaded by lift-gate rather than ramp and secured over the tyres; on an Artura, battery documentation is raised at collection, not at the terminal. Our import service runs both sides as one file.

5

UAE customs clearance

Customs entry, then the Vehicle Clearance Certificate, then GCC-spec conformity through MoIAT if the car is not already GCC-specification, with duty and VAT settled.

6

RTA inspection, registration and delivery

Inspection, insurance, registration, Mulkiya and plates — then the car delivered enclosed. Flown cars arrive at DXB or DWC; sea shipments through Jebel Ali, with Khalifa and Khalid as alternatives.

Documents and customs for a McLaren

The UAE charges 5% customs duty on the car's value plus freight and insurance, and 5% VAT on the duty-inclusive total. Once conformity, inspection, insurance and registration are added, the all-in landed cost on a high-value car commonly runs 13–18% above its value. We set that expectation before you commit.

A European or US-specification McLaren is not automatically accepted for UAE road use. It needs a GCC Conformity Certificate from MoIAT before the RTA will register it; MoIAT assesses climate and air-conditioning tolerance, emissions, lighting and electrical configuration, safety and structure, and speedometer calibration in km/h. Two further rules catch people out: the UAE registers left-hand-drive cars for road use, with right-hand-drive restricted — which matters for a marque built in Britain — and cars over ten years old need pre-approval.

McLaren models we ship

Artura & Artura Spider (V6 plug-in hybrid)
750S & 750S Spider
GTS (the longest current car at 4,683 mm)
W1 (399 cars worldwide)
765LT & 765LT Spider
720S, 675LT & 650S
570S, 600LT, 620R & McLaren GT
Senna, Speedtail & Elva
F1, P1, Solus GT & Senna GTR — collector and track-only cars

Two eligibility notes. The Solus GT (25 cars, single-seat) and the Senna GTR are track-only: they ship as freight and are then run at circuits, displayed or stored, so the file is built for a car that will never present at an RTA inspection. And the earliest modern McLarens — 12C, 650S, P1 — are now past ten years old, putting them in the pre-approval category.

On the corporate question owners ask: McLaren Automotive has been under Abu Dhabi ownership since CYVN Holdings completed its acquisition in 2025. That changes nothing about how the cars are built in Woking, or how one clears UAE customs.

Shipping a McLaren from Dubai

Export runs the same way in reverse, and March to June is the peak air-export window, when owners fly cars to Europe ahead of the Gulf summer. On the Dubai side we handle the RTA export certificate and deregistration; at destination, the import formalities and any compliance step that applies. Dubai to the UK is a frequent run for this marque — see our export service. Book early.

Tracking, safety and insurance

The car is enclosed from collection, restrained over the tyres, and covered by a documented condition report, so its state is recorded before and after transit. Your dedicated coordinator — one named contact, not a queue — updates you at collection, departure, arrival, clearance and delivery.

On insurance the distinction decides outcomes. Clause C (Total Loss) pays out only if the car is lost; Clause A (All Risk) covers damage in transit as well. For a McLaren we work to Clause A, with no upper limit on the value we will insure. That is not a formality on a carbon-tub car: a monocoque is replaced rather than straightened, and total-loss-only cover would never reach that outcome. Over the past few years we have moved cars of this type in and out of the UAE on one protocol — enclosed, minimal-touch, documented, one coordinator.

What shapes your McLaren shipping quote

Rather than publish a figure that would not survive contact with your actual car, here is what moves it:

  • The variant, not just the model
  • Air versus a dedicated enclosed container
  • Origin and routing
  • Powertrain, since an Artura is a hybrid movement with the documentation that follows
  • The car's value, which sets both the insurance basis and the duty calculation
  • Age and status
  • Season

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I ship my McLaren to Dubai safely?

By air in an enclosed unit, lifted only at the marked points, loaded by lift-gate rather than ramp, restrained over the tyres, covered as all-risk with no upper limit on value, and run by one coordinator through to RTA registration.

How much does it cost to ship a McLaren to Dubai?

It varies with the variant, method, origin and routing, the car's value and the season, plus UAE duty and VAT on import. We do not publish a flat figure because it would mislead — request a quote and we will price your exact car.

Why does a McLaren need special lifting and jacking care?

Because the carbon monocoque is the structure of the car, and most of what you see underneath is aerodynamic panelling. The lifting points are defined and marked; there is no steel sill to take a load elsewhere. A tub is replaced rather than repaired, which makes this the most important briefing on the shipment.

Does my McLaren need GCC-spec conformity?

If it is not already GCC-specification, yes — a GCC Conformity Certificate from MoIAT before the RTA can register it, which applies to most UK, European and US-market cars. We arrange it as part of clearance.

Can you ship an Artura or another hybrid McLaren by air?

Yes. The Artura's 7.4 kWh lithium-ion pack travels under a mandatory state-of-charge limit, and our standing rule — charge under a quarter — sits inside it. Preparation happens at collection and the paperwork travels with the car.

How should I prepare my McLaren before it ships?

Fuel or charge below a quarter; the car clean, so its condition is unambiguous on inspection, and empty of personal belongings. Confirm the recovery eye is in the luggage compartment, and tell us about any aftermarket splitter, lowered ride height or non-standard wheels.

Can you ship a McLaren from the UK to Dubai?

Yes, and it is the natural corridor, since the cars are assembled in Woking, Surrey. Settle drive configuration first: the UAE registers left-hand-drive cars for road use, and right-hand-drive is restricted. We establish that as part of the quote.

Can a track-only McLaren such as a Solus GT be registered in Dubai?

No. Track-only cars ship and clear customs as vehicles but are not built to a road standard, so they are kept for circuit use, display or storage rather than presented for RTA registration. That changes what the arrival file has to achieve.

My McLaren is over ten years old — can it still be imported?

Cars over ten years old require pre-approval before shipping — which now covers the 12C, 650S and P1. A car over thirty may qualify as a classic under a permit: a restricted-use registration rather than an ordinary one.

Can you ship a McLaren from Dubai as well as to it?

Yes. Export is busiest March to June, when owners move cars to Europe ahead of the summer; Dubai to the UK is a frequent run for this marque.
