To export a car from Dubai, you cancel its Dubai registration through the RTA and obtain an export certificate, then the car leaves the UAE on a customs export declaration. The part that catches owners out is timing. The RTA export certificate is valid for seven days, so it needs to fit around a confirmed collection and shipping plan rather than be obtained early and left to expire.
This guide sets out the RTA requirements, how export plates work, what customs needs, and how to sequence it all with the shipment. Opera Shipping’s car export service can plan the collection, freight and destination handover around those dates.
What the RTA export certificate is
In Dubai, the export certificate is one of the outcomes of the RTA’s Cancel Vehicle Registration service. Once issued, the car’s Dubai registration is cancelled and it can no longer be used on Dubai roads under its old plates. The same service also issues a possession certificate for keeping a car off the road, and a transfer certificate for moving it to another emirate. For an export, you need the export certificate specifically.
Companies exporting a vehicle use a separate corporate version of the service, which asks for the trade licence and a company letter.
What the RTA asks of an individual owner
According to the RTA’s service page, an individual owner needs to:
- present their Emirates ID;
- pay all outstanding traffic fines;
- have valid registration, or pass an electronic technical inspection first if it has expired;
- hand over the vehicle plates and the Salik tag.
The page also notes that a residence visa is generally required. If the car is financed, speak to your lender before you plan the export. The RTA page does not set out lender requirements, but a finance agreement can affect whether and when the registration can be cancelled.

The seven-day validity, and why it shapes your plan
The RTA states that the export certificate is valid for seven days. If it expires, a chassis test is needed before a new certificate can be issued. For that reason, apply for the certificate once collection is agreed and the freight is booked, not while you are still comparing quotes.
A practical sequence looks like this:
- Choose the method and confirm the booking, with a collection date.
- Clear fines and confirm the registration and insurance are valid.
- Apply for the export certificate shortly before collection.
- Hand the car, keys and documents to the collection team on the agreed date.
- The car is delivered to the port or airport and declared for export.
Export plates, and when you need them
If you want to drive the car to the port yourself, the RTA can issue export plates on request. These are only available when the car is registered and insured, and the existing insurance can be used for the remaining period when the owner stays the same. The RTA restricts driving on export plates to main roads leading out of the country, and the plates must be returned. If they are not handed back within 14 days, the RTA states the transaction is cancelled without refund.
For a valuable or low-clearance car, you may prefer enclosed collection by the shipping company, which removes the need to drive it to the terminal at all. Ask for collection to be included in your quote if that suits you.
Customs: the export declaration and the clearance certificate
Goods leaving Dubai are declared to Dubai Customs on an export declaration, supported by documents such as the invoice. For a car that was originally imported into the UAE, the Vehicle Clearance Certificate issued at import matters again. Dubai Customs states in its customer guide that an imported vehicle must have this certificate to be registered or exported. Find it before the export date, or ask us to check what is needed if it cannot be located.
Plan the destination side at the same time
The UAE paperwork is only half of an export. Import duty, VAT and registration rules at the destination decide the total cost and when the car can be driven again. If you are moving to Europe or the UK, start with our route pages for car shipping from Dubai to Europe and Dubai to the UK. Our guides to importing a car from Dubai to the UK and importing a car from Dubai to Europe explain the duty, VAT and registration on arrival.
For the main leg, compare air freight with a dedicated container for a valuable car, or RoRo shipping for a standard running vehicle.
What to send for an export quote
Tell us the make, model and year, where the car is in Dubai, the destination address and the date you need it there. Mention whether the car is financed and whether you hold the original customs clearance certificate. Send those details through our shipping quote form and we will set out a plan that places the export certificate at the right point in the timeline.
